Doughnuts & Layovers

May 11, 2016

Today we drove from Furman University to the GSP airport in Greenville, SC to catch an early flight to Atlanta, GA. From there we flew to JFK International Airport in NYC. We had a ten hour layover until our flight to Keflavik, Iceland. I spent a lot of that time exploring the airport, eating snacks, and hanging out with some others in our group of twenty people. We all ate together at one of the airport restaurants. I had a delicious chicken salad with avocados and tomatoes. Later on, Jessie and I stopped by a healthy smoothie bar. It was good that we drank something healthy before Suresh surprised us with Dunkin Donuts later on. I came into this only knowing a few people in the group, but everyone has been super friendly and welcoming. We all have a background in environmental/sustainability science, so we are all super excited to study geology in the land of ice and fire!

Once I boarded the plane to Keflavik, I found myself in the middle seat, stuck between two strangers. The girl on my right just graduated from grad school, and she is meeting up with some Scottish friends in Reykjavík. The man on my left is in his mid fifties and he is a well seasoned traveler. He is from Phoenix, AZ and he and his wife take at least two international trips every year. This is the first time that any of us have taken a trip to Iceland, so we have been eagerly sharing our travel plans and expectations. Next stop, Iceland!❄️
